Anna Stradner: "Dynamics of Protein Solutions on Multiple Length and Time Scales"

Lund University, Sweden

Anna Stradner is a Professor at the Division of Physical Chemistry at Lund University in Sweden specializing on biocolloids studied by scattering techniques. Her current research focuses on the properties of concentrated protein solutions and mixtures with a particular interest in protein dynamics under crowded conditions.

Anna studied at the University of Graz/Austria where she obtained her PhD in Physical Chemistry.  She then worked as a Senior Scientist in the Soft Condensed Matter Group in Fribourg/Switzerland focusing on the properties of synthetic colloids as well as proteins in solution using neutron, X-ray and light scattering techniques. In 2008 she obtained the ‘Venia Legendi’ in Experimental Physics at the University of Fribourg. From 2008 to 2011 she headed the Food and Bioscience Group at the Adolphe Merkle Institute in Switzerland. In 2011 she transferred her activities to the Division of Physical Chemistry at Lund University.

Jeremy C. Smith: "Motions in Biomolecules"

University of Tennessee/Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA

Prof. Jeremy C. Smith has led research groups in France, Germany and the United States. After postdoctoral work at Harvard with Nobel Laureate Martin Karplus, in 1989 he established a Biomolecular Simulation group at the Commissariat à l’Énergie Atomique in Saclay, near Paris. In 1998 he became the first chair in computational biology in Germany, at the University of Heidelberg, and in 2006 became the first University of Tennessee/Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair and also Founding Director of the UT/ORNL Center for Molecular Biophysics. Smith’s interests include the high-performance computer simulation of biological macromolecules in protein physics, drug discovery, vaccine design and energy, neutron and environmental sciences. He has supervised over 150 staff, students and postdoctoral fellows. As of 2021 Smith has published 470 peer-reviewed scientific articles that have been cited over 45,000 times.

Francesco Piscitelli: "Novel 10B-based Detectors for Neutron Scattering Science"

European Spallation Source ERIC, Lund, Sweden

Dr. Francesco Piscitelli is an expert in thermal neutron detectors at the Detector Group of the European Spallation Source in Sweden since 2015. He has specialised in alternative technologies, mainly in 10B-based detectors. Between 2010 and 2014, he was based at the Institut Laue-Langevin ILL (Grenoble, FR) where he carried out his PhD in Physics from the University of Perugia (Italy) and a post-doc with ESS. During the past years he has dedicated his work to one of the major current issues in neutron detection: alternative solutions to the scarce 3He. He tackled both the problem of 3He replacement for large area applications and the performance enhancements for small area high resolution and high rate detectors. He contributed to the design, construction and characterization of several detectors, including the quantification of the gamma-ray and fast neutron sensitivities of 10B-based detectors to demonstrate the reliability of this new technology. He has been always interested and involved in neutron reflectometry. He has developed the detectors that will be installed at the two ESS reflectometers exceeding the current limits of 3He based detectors operational at existing reflectometry instruments.
